Heartburn Home Remedies

Just What Are The Top Heartburn Home Remedies ?

There are practically as many home remedies for heartburn as there are people affected with this painful condition.

Before we talk about home remedies, we should discuss the difference between someone who gets heartburn occasionally perhaps because of what they ate and those who get heartburn consistently, perhaps even daily.

If you get heartburn daily, you may have a condition known as GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease). Left untreated, your stomach acids can cause repetitive damage to your esophagus, throat or mouth. This repetitive damage can lead to one of the worst prognoses possible, Cancer.

GERD can also be indicative of a serious underlying condition such as sleep apnea. Sleep apnea occurs when your body enters a deep sleep and your muscles lose their tone completely. In some people, when they lose muscle tone in their throat, their throat closes. When the diaphragm heaves (trying to breathe), it pulls the stomach acid up to the esophagus and throat causing heartburn. Sleep apnea has been linked to heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes.

As you can see, if you are a chronic (ongoing) sufferer you really need to see your physician and not experiment with any home remedies for heartburn.

If you suffer from occasional heartburn, some of these remedies may be right for you.

First, what not to do. Occasional heartburn is often brought on by poor dietary habits. Do not eat too much at any one sitting. Your body may have a hard time digesting all of that food and will increase the production of stomach acid, possibly leading to heartburn.

Coffee, alcohol, chocolate, butter, cream and spicy foods are also common triggers for heartburn. They key is for you to pay attention to what foods cause your body to have heartburn and avoid those foods.

Now to the heartburn home remedies. Many people find that water or milk will provide some relief from heartburn. Milk actually increases the stomach acid but it also provides a small protective lining in the esophagus, throat and mouth.

If you experience heartburn mainly when lying down, use pillows to prop yourself up. Gravity can sometimes help you in your fight against heartburn.

Many people swear by ginger root. The best idea is to buy raw ginger root and make a tea out of it. Ginger root has a coming ingredient that settles the stomach and hence can settle the heartburn.

I have saved the best for last. The home remedy for heartburn that has the most anecdotal evidence is apple cider vinegar. Simply mix one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in about a half a glass of water and drink. I know that this seems counter intuitive to add an acid to your stomach acid but it sure worked for me.

In summary, if you have severe or chronic heartburn please sees your physician to avoid any complications. If your heartburn is infrequent, try lifestyle changes such as avoiding trigger foods or sleeping upright. For immediate relief, try ginger root tea or milk or even apple cider vinegar!

Heartburn Drugs (Proton Pump Inhibitors) Lead to Bone Fractures

Filed under: Acid Reflux, Heartburn Occasional, Heartburn Treatments, GERD Treatment — Administrator @ 5:42 am

Heartburn drugs can raise the risk of a broken hip in people older than 50 when they are taken for more than a year, according to a study of more than 145,000 seniors.

The researchers believe the drugs may make it more difficult for the body to absorb calcium, leading to weaker bones and fractures.

The drugs causing the most problems were of a class known as proton pump inhibitors, which include Nexium, Prevacid and Prilosec. There was a similar but smaller risk of hip fractures for drugs called H2 blockers, such as Tagamet and Pepcid.

Patients who used proton pump inhibitors for more than a year had a 44 percent greater risk of hip fracture, and the longer they took the drug, the greater the risk. And those who took high doses had more than twice the risk of hip fractures. Men in the study were more at risk than women, possibly because women may get more calcium in their diets.

Nexium is the third best-selling drug in the world, with annual sales exceeding $5 billion. People with chronic heartburn can develop painful ulcers in the esophagus, and in rare cases, some can end up with damage that can lead to esophageal cancer.

Just What is Heartburn

Filed under: Acid Reflux, Heartburn Occasional, GERD Treatment — Administrator @ 6:00 am

Heartburn, is a feeling of burning, warmth, heat, or pain that generally starts in the upper abdomen beneath the lower breastbone.
It is also known as reflux espohagitis or GERD.

Heartburn occurs when food and stomach juices back up (reflux) into the esophagus, which is the tube that leads from the throat to the stomach.

Heartburn can occur with other symptoms, such as hoarseness, a feeling that food is stuck in your throat, tightness in your throat, a hoarse voice, wheezing, asthma, dental problems, or bad breath.

What Starts as GERD Can Lead to Barretts Esophagus

Filed under: Acid Reflux, GERD Treatment, Barretts Esophagus — Administrator @ 5:10 am

Simple heartburn is not always just an irritating circumstance that is rapidly fixed by an antacid available at the local supermarket.

It can also be indicative of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which is the persistent bringing up of acid from the stomach into the lower esophagus.

long term GERD can at times influence Barretts esophagus, a state in which the color and composition of the cells lining your lower esophagus alter because of persistent exposure to acid from the stomach.

Barrett’s esophagus is not a common disease. Only a tiny proportion of men and women with GERD end up contracting Barrett’s esophagus. unfortunately, once Barrett’s esophagus is diagnosed, there is a much larger danger of progression to esophageal cancer, which frequently spreads from the esophagus to lymph nodes and to additional organs. Though increased, the consummate danger of esophageal cancer for a person suffering from Barretts esophagus is thankfully very small.

In the next chapter, I will reveal how you can get rid of, or restrict the quantity of stomach acid that flows up into the bottom end of your esophagus.

Simple lifestyle changes are the first thing that you must undertake.

Acid Reflux Just What is GERD?

GERD Explained in Simple Terms

The stomach is well able to withstand the stomach acid.
Its part of its job, but the lining of the esophagus is not designed to handle the return of the acidic mixture of stomach contents which back up into it with reflux.

Remember that your stomach acid is more potent than battery acid and will damage the lining of the esophagus.

Imagine a valve at the bottom of your esophagus which lets food through to the stomach. This valve is called the lower esophagael sphincter (les)

Normally this valve operates only one way, but when it is weak, it can allow food and acid from the stomach back up into the esophagus and thats when your problems begin.

GERD..Why Heartburn Symptoms Are Often Worse at Night

Filed under: Acid Reflux, GERD Treatment — Administrator @ 1:46 am

GERD Why heartburn symptoms are often worse at night

Heartburn or GERD is often worse at night, when they can also interrupt your sleep and may affect your ability to function the next day.
Because swallowing and saliva help keep acid reflux in check, as you swallow less often when sleeping, reflux at night may lead to damaging acid exposure in the esophagus.

If your night time heartburn is caused by erosive GERD, a condition in which sores develop in the lining of the esophagus, medication should be sought.

Pantoprazole Sodium marketed under the name of protonix may be of assistance, but seek medical advice first, as only your doctor can tell if you have erosive GERD.

Let me know if you try it and it eliminates the nightime heartburn of erosive GERD that may keep you from getting a good night’s sleep.

GERD Symptoms (Gastroesophageal reflux disease )

GERD Symptoms (Gastroesophageal reflux disease )

GERD is felt as a burning sensation plus pain in the stomach and chest behind the breastbone.
The symptoms of GERD include bloating, gas, and nausea, often accompanied by shortness of breath and an acidic or sour taste in the throat and mouth.

GERD is caused when hydrochloric acid, which is use to digest food, is released up the esophagus.
On its way up the acid can irritate the sensitive tissues in the esophagus and throat.
In normal stomach function, the esophageal sphincter muscle contracts and prevents the stomach acid from passing up into the esophagus.

GERD occurs if this muscle is not functioning properly and allows the acid to slip past it resulting in when GERD symptoms.

Other names used include Acid reflux disease ,dyspepsia, heasrtburn or acid indigestion.

If left un treated, repeated flow of acid through the esophagus can scar and produce changes in the cells lining, sometimes causing cancer.

A hiatus hernia develops when the stomach bulges up into the diaphragm, this condition can also cause Acid Reflux.
Other triggers for GERD are alcohol, smoking and eating acidic foods

GERD–Patients Suffer For Two Years Before Seeking Treatment

Filed under: GERD Treatment — Administrator @ 7:45 pm

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease — GERD.

I was interested in this recent report that Gerd suffers often wait for two years before seeking treatment.

People are suffering with distressing symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) for an average of two years before seeking treatment or any care and advice from their primary care physician.

Results from the Burning Desires survey, revealed today, indicate that this may be due to a perception amongst sufferers that while over-the-counter medications are effective, prescription medications will not help.

This is despite the fact that prescription medication in the form of proton pump inhibitors has been proven to provide relief from one of the main symptoms of GERD - heartburn - within five days in most people.

Symptoms such as heartburn place a considerable burden on sufferers’ lives, with more than 80 percent of those surveyed having made lifestyle modifications, such as avoiding certain foods, to try to control their symptoms as part of the treatment.

Commenting on the results of the survey, Professor Roger Jones, Wolfson Professor of General Practice, King’s College London said that the results of the survey highlight that many GERD patients are suffering unnecessarily.

“There is a mistaken belief amongst many GERD sufferers that prescription medications will not be able to help them, as they feel they can control their symptoms with over the counter remedies. However, these remedies only relieve occasional heartburn and should not be relied upon for long-term symptom control.
It is important that sufferers visit their physician to discuss their disease as they may be prescribed a more effective treatment, such as proton pump inhibitor therapy, which can have a significant impact on controlling symptom severity and improving quality of life.”
