Eating Patterns and Acid Reflux

Filed under: Acid Reflux — Administrator @ 6:13 am

If you are suffering from heartburn the first thing you should do is take a good look at what you are eating.
Over consumption of fatty foods and refined carbohydrates including biscuits, cakes and white bread can affect digestion and and cause reflux symptoms.
Other irritants include salt, spices, sugar, curries, coffee, fizzy drinks and alcohol.
If you feel that you are not over indulging in any of these foods, and reflux symptoms persist, see your doctor, as untreated gastric reflux can damage the esophagus and even lead to cancer.
Doctors can now conduct an impedance pH test which determines whether your reflux is acid or not.

Acid Reflux…Seek Treatment?

Filed under: Acid Reflux — Administrator @ 11:33 pm

It is important not to ignore acid reflux or heartburn as acid reflux over time can scar the lower osophagus
Initial medical treatment for GERD is by antacid medication.
This can relieve the symptoms by neutralising stomach acid, but they do not treat the actual cause of the problem and can cause a disruption to the bodies acid/alkaline balance if the reflux is caused by insufficient stomach acid.
If your problem is minor, it may respond to supplements which support digestive processes such as those mentioned in my previous report.

Find Suitable Supplements For Acid Reflux

Filed under: Acid Reflux — Administrator @ 1:10 am

Before you take drastic action to treat heartburn lets look at suitable supplements to aid digestion.
As well as supplements that contain digestive enzymes and hydrochloric acid, there are a number of specific formulas to relieve indegestion.
these contain ingredients such as active herbs including Globe Artichoke Leaf, Gentian Root, Fennel Seed and Ginger.
These natural herbs have been used for years in treating stomach complaints.
Swedish Bitters is another possible treatment well recommended.
Probiotics such as Lactobacillus Acidophilus and Bifidacterium lactis are beneficial for digestion by maintaining the friendly bacteria in the gastrointestional tract.

Ease reflux by Settling Your Stomach

Filed under: Acid Reflux — Administrator @ 11:52 pm

Another of the questions that I am often asked, is what simple things can be done to settle ones stomach.
Try to detoxify your body with natural supplements such as a liver complex tonic containing liver boosting ingredients such as milk thistle and dandelion
Digestion can be helped by sipping warm peppermint or ginger tea after meals.
Consume plenty of alkaline foods such as leafy green vegetables.
Avoid consumption of excessive liquid with meals as this can dilute your digestive juices.
Eat your evening meal early so you are not going to bed on an empty stomach.
Tomorrow we will look at other supplements.

Are Antacid Pills any Good For Heartburn?

Filed under: Acid Reflux — Administrator @ 10:39 pm

At a recent conference, I was asked of the value of antacid tablets for acid reflux or heartburn.
Antacids reduce the absorption of nutrients such as Iron and this can lead to an increase in blood pressure.
They can also upset the kidneys and their relief is often shortlived.
This prompted me to list common natural and herbal treatments for reflux or GERD which include:
Sipping warm peppermint or ginger tea after meals as both aid digestion.
Consume plenty of alkaline foods such as leafy green vegetables in your meals.
Avoid excessive liquid with your meals as the dilute the stomach acid and hinder digestion.
Avoid eating late so you are not going to bed on a full stomach as digestion slows during sleep.
Tomorrow I will discuss eating patterns that should be adopted.

Acid Reflux Symptoms? Possible Hydrochloric Acid Deficiency

Filed under: Acid Reflux — Administrator @ 12:42 am

So, you are belching and have a bloated feeling in your stomach.
lets try and find the cause.
If you are over 40, It is possible that you may be deficient in stomach ( hydrochloric) acid.
This results in poor digestion and difficulty in absorbtion of vitamins and minerals.
This surprises most people as they think heartburn is caused by too much stomach acid wheras the opposite is often true.

Because of this, it is important to have your reflux/heartburn symptoms analysed and treated, as a deficiency in hydrochloric acid can be responsible for other conditions including asthma, arthritis, excema and hypothyroidism.
Treatments include Betaine Hydrochloride and Pepsin.

More Information will be provided in my next update tomorrow.

What actually is Acid Reflux?

Filed under: Acid Reflux — Administrator @ 2:00 am

After yesterdays report about cancer and heart disease
being associated with acid reflux (GERD) I have had a number of people asking what actually are the symptoms of reflux disease.

To digest food, one of the stomach’s jobs is to make acid.

The stomach lining is specially designed to resist damage from this
acid, but the esophagus, the food tube which extends from the back of
the mouth to the stomach, is very sensitive to acid.
Normally, acid and stomach content do not flow back into the esophagus, but you have probably experienced the sensation of reflux when stomach content flows back into the esophagus usually after eating or when we go to bed.
It’s normal to experience reflux once in a while.
But refluxing is abnormal when it happens frequently as is known as Gastro esophageal Reflux Disease, or GERD.
With GERD, food and acid spills into the windpipe and lungs, causing
or worsening such pulmonary problems as asthma, bronchitis and
pneumonia.
When the esophagus is irritated for long periods of time by acid
reflux, it may form scar tissue and narrowing, making it difficult to swallow.
Some patients may experience more unusual symptoms such as throat pain, chronic cough or throat clearing, gagging, and sour taste in the mouth.
Chronic irritation of the esophagus can, in extreme cases, lead to cancer where the stomach and esophagus meet.
If your reflux is happening regularly, treatment should be sought.

Acid Reflux-GERD, May Be Linked to Cancers and heart Disease.

Filed under: Acid Reflux — Administrator @ 6:57 pm

In the past we used to dismiss acid reflux or heartburn as indigestion, take an anti acid pill and forget about it.
Studies in current times show that we should not dismiss it so lightly.
Reported in the June issue of the journal Archives of Surgery, was research on 215 people who had surgery for cancer of the lining of the far end of the esophagus.
It appeared that GERD sufferers has a death rate approximately double those who were not afflicted with this condition.
These findings come on top of research that consuming food high in acid can cause an allergic response in your digestive system, and some of the food will be absorbed into your bloodstream as acid waste…sounds terrible!
The remainder of undigested food will linger in your intestines causing further release of acid into your bloodstream. The result is a degeneration of the cardiovascular system.

Poor digestion also creates the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive and enter the the cardiovascular system, causing inflamation of the arterial walls.
Unless this acid accumulation in the body is reduced, risk of heart attack and cardiovascular disease increases.

Acid Reflux Culprit in Sore Throat

Filed under: Acid Reflux — Administrator @ 12:09 am

Doctors at Mayo Clinic say sore throat, chronic cough and lingering bronchitis might actually be caused by acid reflux and are conducting tests to determine if heartburn medications can help.
Patients with no heartburn and no upset stomach were surprised when told they may be suffering from acid reflux syndrome
( Most people with reflux feel have a common symptom of a burning sensation caused by stomach acid making contact with the esophagus. )
It now appears that in some people, it travels further and throat problems develop.
Research into the use of a proton pump inhibitor commonly used to treat heartburn is continuing.

Acid Reflux Home Remedies

Filed under: Acid Reflux — Administrator @ 7:02 am

I would like to share this article with you by Rudy Silva.

Most people have digestive problems that create a variety of illnesses that we see as they age. The main problem is with the food that they eat. As has already been said many times, we eat more junk, processed, and packaged food than our stomach can digest. We eat more meat and protein then we should. We drink more unusual drinks that are mainly sugar.

You need to eat more live vegetables and fruits. This will minimize any acid reflux problems you might have.

Your body is designed to be electrically balanced. This is done by eating both acid and alkaline foods. If you eat too much acid food or alkaline food you move towards illness. Acid reflux is one of these illnesses.

When too much acid food is eaten, the stomach can’t digest it completely. The excess undigested food turns into acid waste. This waste causes stomach spasms or twitching that causes an increase in stomach gas that pops open the valve between the esophagus and stomach.

Acidic stomach content is sucked into the esophagus causing a burning sensation in the chest and throat. This is acid reflux or heartburn.

Acid Reflux Remedies

Here are three acid reflux remedies that you can start using right away to decrease the effects of acid reflux

* Digestive enzymes – Just before you eat, take some digestive enzymes. There are a variety of types that you can buy in a health food store – cost is about $15.00. Digestive enzymes will help you digest your food in the stomach and lessen the work the stomach has to do. But don’t take enzymes if you have an ulcer.

* Drinking water – When eating your meal, don’t drink any cold liquid. Cold liquid in the stomach decreases the digestive activity and your food will take longer to digest. It is best not to drink any water with your meal since this decrease the strength of your hydrochloric acid. If you have to drink water to clear your throat, drink water at room temperature.

* Vegetables – Eat vegetables with lunch and dinner and decrease the amount of meat and protein you eat. Don’t over eat since this puts an extra load on your stomach and you may not be able to digest all this food. Try eating your vegetables raw when possible since this gives you extra enzymes and plenty of minerals. Any time you eat bread eat it with some vegetables. Bread is hard to digest and the added fiber helps its digestion and helps to move it through the colon faster.

Just doing these three suggestions will help you improve your digestion and help to relieve your acid reflux. Concentrate on changing your eating habits and the types and quantities of food that you eat, if you want to stop the effects of acid reflux.
